"As soon as you see the eyes and features of both main young actors in Youth, you recognize the deep sight and nobility of Tom Shoval." - Alejandro González Iñárritu (The Revenant, Birdman, Babel)
Youth creates an acrid vision of a country under economic and military stress, as the middle class is disappearing and the proliferation of arms is putting assault weapons in the hands of teenagers. In Mr. Shoval’s grim view, Israel is under siege from within.” - Stephen Holden, The New York Times
Israeli writer-director Tom Shoval’s tense and striking debut - smoothly flits between familial melodrama, psychological thriller, and socioeconomic allegory.” - Aaron Hillis, Village Voice
The Story:
Twin brothers Yaki and Shaul's comfortable middle-class existence is threatened when their father loses his job and they are on the brink of losing their apartment. Yaki takes advantage of his recently acquired assault rifle from military service and the brothers puts into action a plan equally inspired by desperation and a lifelong diet of violent mainstream American cinema from Shaul's part-time job at a local movie theater.
The brothers set their sights on Shaul's pretty young classmate and what starts out as a simple plan quickly spirals out of control.
Director Tom Shoval was mentored by two-time Academy Award winner, Alexandro G. Iñárritu as part of the Rolex Mentors & Protégés program.
